SMC BMC Design Award 2026 “Live Better, Live Green”
The European Alliance for SMC BMC is launching the 5th edition of the SMC BMC Design Award. This international Design Competition is recognizing and promoting design excellence in using SMC and BMC advanced materials. The theme of this edition is “Live Better, Live Green” – SMC solutions for improving Quality of Life. The award ceremony will be take place at JEC World 2026 in Paris.

The European Alliance for SMC BMC is proud to announce the winner of the 4th edition of the SMC BMC Design Award. Floris de Groot of Technical University Delft received the Gold Award for his winning Quiet Cover design during the award ceremony at JEC World 2024.

SMC BMC Design Award 2024 – Finalists announced, Ceremony at JEC World in Paris
Earlier this month the Jury of the SMC BMC Design Award 2024 selected the finalists out of all submitted projects. The winners will come to the Award Ceremony at JEC World in Paris on March 6 to present their designs and receive a nice price.

Successful SMCCreate 2023 Design Conference in Prague by AVK and SMC BMC Alliance
With over 60 participants from Europe and the USA the second edition of the SMCCreate Design Conference took place from November 7th to 8th in Prague. The conference was jointly organized by the AVK – Federation of Reinforced Plastics and the European Alliance for SMC BMC, promoting the use of SMC and providing design tools to designers for applying these versatile materials.

Design Guide 3 ‘Sustainable Living with SMC BMC’ – Experiences from the SMC BMC Design Award
In 2022, the European Alliance for SMC BMC launched the 3rd edition of its well-known Design Competition, seeking ideas and proposals for using these versatile materials. This edition’s topic was “Sustainable Living”, challenging young designers to create novel products and solutions for our living environment, for keeping us healthy, use less space, or minimize energy consumption.
The winner of the Gold Award of the SMC BMC Design Award 2022 was Isa Buitenhuis, student Industrial Design at Technical University Delft. During the award ceremony at JEC World 2022 she presented the LightTurn, a new experience for seated showering targeted at elderly consumers, providing great ergonomics to the user, durability, low water usage and a wonderful design. In this design guide you can read about her winning design project, her experience with SMC BMC, and the follow up with the members of the SMC BMC Alliance.
SMC and BMC are composite materials ideal for making light and intricate parts that combine structural performance with a smooth surface finish. For that reason, SMC and BMC are increasingly used in a broad range of end-use applications and markets. The European Alliance for SMC BMC is launching a series of design guides that explain to designers how these versatile materials can be used, and manufactured in larger production series.

Finn Kooijman Winner of the SMC BMC Design Award 2019 - Sustainable Mobility
Finn Kooijman (student Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University Delft) has won the Gold Award of the SMC BMC Design Award 2019. During the Award Ceremony at Composites Europe he presented the Arcus, a docking and recharge unit for electrical scooters. Arcus offers an innovative solution for the littering of cities by electrical vehicles, while still promoting sustainable transport of people in urban environments.

ASTAR Carbon Fibre SMC
ASTAR is currently producing CSMC (Carbon Fibre Sheet Moulding Compound) material for the multifunctional spare wheel pan of the new Mercedes-AMG E-Class, moulded by the German company EACC. This part was one of the winners of the JEC Innovation Award in 2017.

CONVERTING NEW IDEAS INTO REAL PARTS

Companies do work to develop new roving for high-performance SMC/BMC resin systems in order to enlarge the market potential with continuous SMC/BMC performance improvements vs. competing materials. We talk about dedicated innovation and technical service resources.
For example at JM, they can count on a new technical laboratory with a pilot SMC compounding line in Trnava, Slovakia to further test SMC formulations and meet customers demand.
